In 1965, Intel cofounder Gordon Moore observed that transistors – components in chip-based technology – were shrinking at a remarkable rate. Moore predicted the number of transistors that could fit into a single chip would double while costs were reduced by 50 percent, meaning that devices could become half as expensive and twice as powerful every year. While “app” is an abbreviation for “application,” which can be used on any piece of hardware, the term typically refers to programs on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. The term “software” is most often used to describe computer programs. Both may exist as a downloaded tool on a device or online in the cloud. Advanced tools work well for experienced students in upper level classes but may be overwhelming for a novice. Free apps tend to be user-friendly and serve as a foundation for more advanced technologies.
