The interconnected network of smart devices with the aim of collecting data and making intelligent decisions is known as Internet of Things (IoT). With the advancement in technologies, this vision is turning into a reality. Although, we have taken a huge leap in IoT domain, there are certain challenges to be addressed particularly in the domain of security and reliability of data. IoT is vulnerable to threats concerning data security and privacy. To tackle this issue, blockchain has surfaced as a key technology, which has the capability to transform the way we share information. Blockchain follows “security by design” procedure that can help in addressing various security requirements of IoT. Blockchain properties, namely, auditability, transparency, immutability, data encryption, and operational resilience can be used to overcome various architectural shortcomings of IoT. This chapter exhaustively investigates the integration of blockchain and IoT with the aim to study the current research trends in the usage of blockchain-related modules aiding IoT. A complete review on the ways blockchain can be adapted to the specific needs of IoT so as to develop blockchain-based IoT (BIoT) applications are presented. It also analyzes various challenges in integrating the two technologies and depicts analysis as to how blockchain could potentially improve the domain of IoT. At the end, the main open issues and future research directions are discussed.
