This chapter shows the situation of industrial production in this period as far as possible by collating and analyzing the Statistics Table of Agriculture and Commerce , the only comprehensive statistical data on industrial and agricultural production at that time. It introduces the investigation methods and scope of the Statistics Table of Agriculture and Commerce, pins down the problems, studies the remedial methods, and gives estimates. The chapter provides a comparative analysis of the estimation, especially a comparative analysis with existing authoritative researches. It conducts preliminary observations and analysis of factory production. The chapter presents a comprehensive introduction and observation of factories, and also special discussion on textile factories. China launched a survey of textile factories as early as 1896 in the late Qing Dynasty, surveyed the silk reeling industry in 1901 and conducted another industrial survey in 1907–1908.
