Open-Source Tools for IoT Security

In these times of evolving research and technology, the Internet of Things has developed a new notion of a connected world of &s;Things.&s; Both humans and devices are an integral part of this new connected world, and the communication has switched from being only human-to-human, into human-to-things and things-to-things communication. With the increasing involvement of &s;things&s; in our daily lives, the need is to provide efficient and appropriate tools for deployment and maintenance of the devices. We have discussed some widely popular open-source tools and classified them into a few categories like operating systems (OS), middleware, platforms, and interfaces for the data flow in an ecosystem-based on their basic functionalities. These tools should be able to address the open issues arising in an IoT environment. The data acquisition and interconnection of devices explain the dissemination around security and the need to cater to it. This study analyzes open-source tools for IoT applications in the context of security functionalities they perform. The comparative study highlights the features provided by different tools. Even though the IoT tools discussed here are an essential integrant of any smart ecosystem, we have to be mindful of the fact that some tools may perform exceptionally well in an environment. In contrast, some others may simply underperform in a particular setup.
