Characterizations of Menger Manifolds and Hilbert Cube Manifolds in Terms of Partitions

We characterize compact Menger manifolds and Hilbert cube manifolds, in the same spirit, as compacta which have partitions of appropriate connectivities and certain kinds of universality. The proofs are based on characterization theorems due to Bestvina and Toruńczyk.
