Increasingly, smartphones come embedded with more and more advanced biometricrecognition systems. The high quality embedded sensors capture the biometric data whichhelps to get higher biometric recognition accuracy and security. On the other hand, thesesensors increase the cost in terms of battery usage, take up extra physical space also somehardware cost. This paper investigates the reliability and effectiveness of fingerphoto ver-ification system developed using a smartphone. Consequently, biometric samples can becollected without the need for dedicated hardware, thus providing a cost-effective and re-liable way to do biometric authentication. The focus of this paper is to study variousbaselines to evaluate the readiness of the technology. To this extent, we present a com-parison between three non-commercial baseline systems with one commercial system. Thecommercial off-the-shelf (COTS) system shows the best performance of an equal error rateof 6.08%.
