Computer-oriented Mathematics: A Student Computer that Really Works

William A. Leonard · Mathematics Teacher Learning and Teaching PK-12 · 1970

At Some time during his mathematics career, the typical high school student has been introduced to the topic of number bases and has probably changed many numbers from one base to anothet, almost always involving base two. The usual justification for this topic is that “it helps students to better understand our own number system” or that “computers use base two.” If you, as a teacher, feel guilt pangs upon offering such an uninspired rationale, you might find the demonstration described below a palatable substitute. Rather than talk about computers and their use of base two, build one and demonstrate base-two utilization! And do it with the minimum materials available in every mathematics classroom, namely, some students and a chalkboard.
