Historically Speaking,—: The evolution of group theory
George H. Miller · Mathematics Teacher Learning and Teaching PK-12 · 1964
Now that the value of group theory in theoretical physics, chemistry, electrical engineering, and electronic computing machines is being realized [8],† it is of interest to look at the origins of group theory. This paper will be concerned only with a résumé of the significant contributions of earlier investigators through the nineteenth century. There are disagreements among the historical authorities as to who originated certain specific topics in group theory, but for the most part there is a uniformity of opinion.
