In order to alleviate the problem that the estimation accuracy and computational complexity in two-dimensional (2-D) direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation, this paper proposes a novel 2-D DOA estimation method based on a sparse L-shaped array consisting of a sparse uniform linear array and a sparse nonuniform linear array. The elevation angles are estimated by an improved multiple signal classification method which utilizes the recursive gridding to improve the searching efficiency. Then the azimuth angles are obtained by adopting the traditional estimation method. The simulation results show that the accuracy of 2-D DOA estimation proposed is much better than that of the other methods.
