Due to the different types of applications and the large number of users on the wireless network, there is massive traffic on access points that weaken the network performance, so it becomes necessary to make a load balancing on these networks and fairly distributes the load among these APs. The purpose of load balancing is to achieve optimal resource utilization, maximize throughput, minimize response time, and avoid overload. In the BSS networks, all load will be on the access point. In this paper, an algorithm is proposed to distribute the load evenly among access points and balancing the load in an ESS WLAN. The proposed algorithm is based on setup a threshold value for the number of packets per second (PPS) on each AP. This algorithm is modelled and simulated using OMNeT++4.6 simulator. In comparison with other algorithms, simulation results show a good improvement in terms of throughput and response time. At 50 users and concerning the unbalanced case, the balanced scenario shows a maximum percent improvement values of 18.66% and 6.09% for throughput and response time, respectively.
