The mobile communication technology is a common twenty first century tool that has revolutionised social communication and informal learning in India. The Internet-enabled mobile phone is used for various operations like communication, assembling information, playing, creating images and videos, etc. among children, teenagers and youths. This paper examines the social impact of mobile phone among the urban Muslim students of higher educational institutions in Silchar town of south Assam. The stratified random sampling technique was applied and an interview schedule was used to accumulate field data from the sampled Muslim students. The study reveals that the mobile phone has become one of the fastest growing communication technologies due to its wireless connectivity and data synchronisation which enable the students to keep in touch with people around them conveniently. The mobile phone is more useful than landline telephone because the students can carry them around, receive text messages and download data. Its service is also cheaper than extending landlines as mobile phone requires low fixed costs in physical infrastructure. It has increased the social interaction of the students with friends, peers and family members and its use has given them social satisfaction as they feel satisfied after using it. On the contrary, the negative influence of mobile phone is found among the students who are diverted from their academic activities towards listening music and other applications. It is concluded that mobile phone has maintained good gender relation among the students by making easier the communication in the realms of education and social life.
