Implementing Routing, Switching, and VLANs in Modern Corporate Networks

Thomas Atkins · Auerbach Publications eBooks · 2020

This chapter discusses how Virtual local area networks, in conjunction with routing and switching, can best be implemented in modern networks. Routers control broadcasts, particularly across low bandwidth wide area network connections, and is deployed widely in most corporate networks. In most cases, switching is the simplest way to increase performance within a particular broadcast domain. Although implementing routing does provide an increased measure of management and security to switched and shared networks, other factors must be weighed before determining the extent to which routing should be deployed. As network devices have evolved, network designs have changed to make the best use of the new capabilities afforded by the latest equipment. But even though several new types of devices have been introduced over the years, network designs have focused on three key points: performance, management, and redundancy.
