Low costs and minimized battery consumption are the main requirements for machine type communications. Power saving mode enables connected devices to sleep during inactive intervals without data transmission and reception. The device can extend the sleeping duration having knowledge about time constraints of data transmission process. The paper presents a study on control capabilities, delegated to third party analytic applications deployed at the network edge, for activation of extended sleeping mode. Such applications may reason about the duration of the device sleeping mode and when required they may initiate device triggering. The study includes the designing of a new mobile edge service and assessment of some service implementation aspects.
