Firefly Algorithm Based OPF

The application of swarm intelligence finds an expeditious and reliable optimization algorithm called firefly algorithm (FFA). This is a metaheuristic algorithm belonging to swarm intelligence group characterized by rhythmic flashing light produced by biochemical process bioluminescence. It is used to solve complex optimal power flow (OPF) problem with unified power flow controller (UPFC). In order to validate Standard IEEE 30 bus, UPFC is employed to demonstrate the performance and suitability of the FFA approach in solving the OPF problem expeditiously. With proper placement of UPFC, there is a reduction in fuel cost by 2.38% and losses by 21%, showing the potential and effectiveness of the FFA approach.
