Network Congestion Awareness in Cloud Data Center with Virtual Machine Migration

Jiankang Dong · Proceedings of the ACM Turing Celebration Conference - China · 2020

Network congestion has become a performance bottleneck in data center, which needs to be solved urgently. In view of this, this study attempts to apply virtual machine migration to change the position of flow sender or receiver in the network topology to optimize the traffic layout so as to effectively reduce the network congestion. Compared with the methods of modifying the flow path or protocol stack, our proposal takes advantage of the elastic features of cloud service and achieves better results for its simplicity. Two aspects are considered in this migration scheme: (1) to minimize the traffic costs between virtual machines; (2) to minimize the migration cost. This scheme proposes a congestion-aware virtual machine migration algorithm with two stages. Our scheme is based on greedy strategy which can achieve low time complexity. The simulation shows that our scheme more effectively reduces the network congestion on the premise of minimizing the migration costs.
