Wide Scope Indefinites

Cornelia Ebert · 2020

As opposed to other quantifiers, indefinites are known to be able to take exceptionally wide scope out of syntactic islands. This chapter deals with the phenomenon of exceptional wide scope, the most common approaches, and their benefits and shortcomings. Starting from the classical referentiality‐based solution of Fodor and Sag, approaches handling indefinites as introducing a choice function, and more recent proposals building on domain restriction, presupposition resolution, or the notion of topicality, are discussed.
