Introduction to SDTL

George Charles Alter · Deep Blue (University of Michigan) · 2020

Structured Data Transformation Language (SDTL) was created by the C2Metadata Project (NSF ACI-1640575) to automate collection of data provenance from scripts used in statistical analysis software. SDTL provides machine-actionable file- and variable-level descriptions of data management and transformation operations. It is expressed in structured formats (JSON, XML, RDF) that application software can process without parsing. SDTL is designed for use in metadata standards, like Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) and Ecological Markup Language (EML). These slides show examples of SDTL and its uses.
