Modelling Semantical 1 , Spatial and Temporal Information in a GIS
May Yuan · 2020
Many advantages result from modelling semantics, time and space, separately in a geographic information system (GIS). This chapter first concerns how to model semantics, time and space as objects in three separate but interlinked domains in a GIS, including the interrelations and interactions among these three types of objects within and between domains. It discusses on how to utilise these interrelations and interactions in order to facilitate geographic analysis and problem-solving. Spatial objects and temporal objects represent spatial and temporal properties of geographic phenomena. Comparisons are made between the two sets of spatial and temporal objects to show how a process mutates its attributes, temporal properties and spatial characteristics in the two sets of time series. Linear and planar enforcement will ensure 1D/2D topological relations at primitive object levels in both spatial and temporal domains. Problems of different spatial and temporal scales may define or link objects in the three domains differently and may sometimes want to share views.
