In the classroom: Fourth graders develop their own subtraction algorithm

Children in the schools of today are being encouraged to experiment, to estimate, to conjecture, and to verify ideas. The development of a spirit of adventure and excitement through such activities has been noted by many teachers. However, it is easier to talk about such a spirit than to create it. Certainly it is more easily attained if guidelines for solutions to problems are kept loose and many possible avenues to these solutions are explored.
