Comparative Analysis on the Scaling Properties of Arbiter-based PUFs

Pablo Rojas, Haytham Idriss, Magdy Bayoumi · 2020

Physically Unclonable Functions (PUFs) are an active area of research for the low-cost security in resource-constrained devices. In this paper a comparative analysis on the security, reliability and area of arbiter-based PUFs such as feed-forward, XOR and the combined feed-forward XOR PUFs is conducted. Furthermore, 32-bit and 64-bit variants are considered to take into account the effects obtained through the scaling of PUFs. To illustrate the relationships between the above properties, this paper offers a multivariate approach in the comparison of the selected PUFs. Thus providing useful insight to the reader regarding the strengths and weaknesses encountered when scaling and adjusting such arbiter-based PUFs. Moreover, this paper considers several instances that would require the prioritization of the mentioned properties.
