Escheresque Tessellations Based on Hexagonal Tiles

This chapter describes some tessellations based on hexagon and hexagram tiles. These tessellations can be drawn on the Equilateral Triangle Tessellation Grid. A wide variety of tessellations may be formed using regular hexagons and hexagrams along with equilateral triangles. The grids should be used to design tiles using the templates. The short black lines show how the corners of hexagons and hexagrams fit on the grid. The chapter presents a template for a hexagon-based Escheresque tile that admits a tessellation by rotation. It also presents a template for a six-fold hexagon-based Escheresque tile that admits a tessellation by rotation. The chapter provides activities for reader to create a tessellation based on hexagonal tiles and to create a hexagon-based tessellation with two-, three-, and six-fold rotational symmetry.
