In this paper, a routing protocol named CL-TPC is proposed. The protocol suggests a cross layer solution, which comprises transport, network, Medium Access Control (MAC), and physical layer of the protocol stack in order to maximize the throughput, and minimizes routing overheads. WSNs are energyconstrained networks due to availability of limited supply nonrechargeable battery. Further the effect of cross-layer solution, on routing overhead, energy consumption, throughput and endto-end delay is investigated. In the proposed solution, control packets provide information to the network layer about the current status of other layers. The routing protocol uses this information to set the transmission power at the physical layer. Simulation of CL-TPC protocol is conducted on NS3 and its performance is compared with that of AODV protocol for network sizes of 25, 50, 75, and 100. Simulation results has shown that CL-TPC has lower routing overhead for all simulated network sizes, higher throughput except for network with 25 nodes and lower end-to-end delay for network with 25 and 75 nodes when compared to AODV, while energy efficiency of both the simulated protocols is same.
