Automatic horizon picking by using the strategy of jigsaw puzzle

Bo Zhang, Yihuai Lou, Xiwu Liu · 2020

Manual seismic horizon interpretation is the least efficient interpretation technique in terms of time and effort. Auto-picking techniques have been around since the early 1980s. However, there are few studies regarding simulating the procedure of manual seismic horizon picking. In this paper, we develop an automatic horizon tracking method by simulating manual horizon picking. We first track horizon patches on seismic vertical slices independently. We then evaluate the picked horizons using the defined loop-tie criteria. We finally merge the tracked horizons and use seismic dip attribute to generate horizon surfaces over the seismic survey. We apply our proposed method to the poststack seismic survey F3 acquired from offshore Netherland. The tracked horizons strictly follow the local seismic reflection events.
