Congratulations: You've finished your training, landed your first software job, and started your journey as a professional. Your growth, though, is just getting started. Some engineers carry around a specific dream, like solving a problem they loathe or helping a community they love. Absent that, or assuming good work at a software company is part of your vision, I'll offer you a placeholder goal: to solve the biggest problems your abilities allow, constantly challenging yourself and nurturing your technical and people skills. While other chapters discuss many of those skills in detail, this chapter will focus on the trajectory per se, including self-study and mentorship, while also discussing how companies evaluate performance.
