An SDN-IoT − Based Framework for Future Smart Cities

Uttam Ghosh, Pushpita Chatterjee, Sachin S. Shetty, Raja Datta · 2020

This chapter discusses a software-defined network-based framework for future smart cities. In the proposed addressing scheme, a new Internet of Things (IoT) device will receive an internet protocol address from one of their existing neighboring peer devices. Manual configuration of IoT devices in most of the cases is inapplicable and error prone due to large size of the network. IoT collects, stores, and exchanges a large volume of heterogeneous data from various types of networks and provides critical services in smart homes and buildings, healthcare systems, transportation networks, utility networks, industrial control and monitoring systems, and so on. A smart city is an urban area that uses different types of IoT devices to collect, process, and analyze the data for monitoring and managing traffic and transportation systems, utilities, power grids, waste management, water supply networks, schools, libraries, hospitals, security and surveillance systems, and other community services.
