Blockchain for Internet of Battlefield Things

Abel O. Gomez Rivera, Deepak K. Tosh, Jaime C. Acosta · 2020

A decentralized platform, namely, Blockchain, can be used to eliminate the security issues involved in distributed Internet of Battlefield Things (IoBT) infrastructures. Blockchain is a decentralized, trust-less platform that creates, distributes, and records information with all participating nodes. A critical component missing in previous blockchain-based IoBT architectures is the empirical evaluation of the proposed blockchain-based network. State-of-art blockchain platforms can be adapted to find a model that is resilient, effective, and computationally feasible. Access policies and role-based privileges determine what users can publish transactions and blocks in a blockchain platform. Permissioned blockchain, also called private chains, restricts access to the network through role-based access controls. The edge-based topology considers a transmitter–receiver setup on which constrained-resource devices offload blockchain-related operations to resourceful nodes. A blockchain-integrated platform for IoBT can be a potential choice to address many security challenges of IoBT networks and possibly help in designing a decentralized security solution.
