Extending Quick Response to New Product Introduction
Rajan Suri · Productivity Press eBooks · 2020
During the last twodecades, a great deal of attention has been devoted to the product development process-and particularly so since the mid-1980s, as US manufacturers have fought to regain market share in major industries such as electronics and automobiles. Researchers and practitioners alike have launched substantial efforts into rethinking traditional ways of developing and introducing new products. This chapter gives a brief review of new product introduction (NPI) techniques, and focuses on the issue of implementing speed in the NPI process. It emphasizes those aspects of QRM principles that support an NPI methodology, and provides key insights related to speed, extending the QRM principles to enable rapid product development and introduction. Before describing the specific techniques for rapid product introduction, the chapter reviews the benefits of speed in the NPI process. A cornerstone of all the recent methodologies for NPI is the formation of a cross-functional project team.
