DYNAMICS OF EXCITATION PATTERNS IN LATERAL INHIBITORY NEURAL FIELDS.

The dynamics of pattern formation are investigated in neural fields of homogeneous structure in lateral inhibition types of mutual connections. The response characteristics of the excitation pattern in the presence of a non-uniform stimulation input and the interactions among a number of excitation patterns are discussed. Finally, the characteristics of a one-dimensional, one-layer field with an analog-valued output function are investigated, revealing a parallel information processing mechanism on the neural field with competitive and cooperative type interactions.
