Abstract This paper proposes a new approach of obtaining the direction-of-arrival (DOA) of near-field broadband signals using uniform circular array (UCA). Since the broadband signal source is located in the near field of the array, the signal received by the UCA can be modeled as a spherical wave. Take discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) of the received signal, we can get the frequency response of the received data. The frequency bins are then transformed to phase-mode signals by taking inverse discrete Fourier Transform (IDFT) of the signal in the spatial domain, which is used to estimate the DOAs of the received signals using multiple signal Classificaton (MUSIC). The covariance matrix of the received signal in phase-mode can be obtained by taking the average of the frequency bins. Furthermore, the proposed method has a characteristic of electronic steerability. Simulation results prove that the proposed near-field broadband DOA estimation algorithm not only has a better performance over the traditional methods, but also reduces the computational complexity effectively.
