Smoke Visualization of Subsonic and Supersonic Flows (The Legacy of F.N.M. Brown).
Thomas J. Mueller · Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) · 1978
There has been a great interest throughout the history of aerodynamics in making flow patterns visible. In addition to the qualitative picture of the flow hoped for, the possibility of obtaining quantitative flow measurements without introducing probes which invariably disturb the flow has provided the necessary incentive for development of these techniques. The past experience related to smoke visualization in wind tunnels is presented, with particular emphasis on the work of F.N.M. Brown. A detailed description of these state-of-the-art techniques and typical qualitative and quantitative results obtained are also presented. (Author)
