The last decade has seen an enormous revolution in terms of technology and research. Each individual is surrounded by a wide variety of sensors and automation systems aiming to ease up human life. Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) has also played a crucial role in revolutionizing human life. Researchers have been focusing on improving the efficiency of WSN and developing various routing protocols. With the gradual rise in the number and complexity of sensors issues like energy dissipation, energy consumption, etc., identifying the right WSN protocol has become a key concern for the research community. Numerous routing protocols are designed with their own limitations and advantages. Choosing a routing protocol for a WSN is a key issue and needs background knowledge with the merits and demerits of each routing protocol. The paper presents the literature survey on available routing protocols along with the detailed classification and their merits & demerits.
