Automatic Sign Language recognition remains a relevant and active research field, with upcoming techniques outperforming the existing developments. Automatic Sign Language Recognition has a broad social impact and can help to eliminate the communication barrier for the hearing impaired. This chapter studies - in chronological order - the existing techniques used in the recent years for SLR such as using Deep Neural Networks, 3D CNN, embedding of a CNN into HMM, adaptive pooling and their challenges and limitations. We also propose to discuss improved approaches which curtail the setbacks and would present an overview of the recent advancements and future extension in this area of research.
