Are Intelligent Tutoring Systems Ready for the Commercial Market?

Jeffrey E. Norton, Julie A. Jones, William B. Johnson, Bradley J. Wiederholt · 2020

This chapter discusses design and development approaches that the readers believe have contributed to this evolution. Training systems that claim to be broad based and generic often fall short of having enough specific information to satisfy anyone’s training objectives. The niche has been related to troubleshooting, usually in technical training domains. Developers must adjust to the different expectations of the commercial market and be willing to learn lessons from commercial product developers. After nearly 20 years of Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) research and development, the readers have seen computer-based training evolve from its primitive beginnings to the current robust, adaptive, multimedia simulations. However, to ensure the commercial success of ITSs, developers must not only further refine their design and development approaches but also realize that the commercial marketplace contains different requirements and constraints than the research and development world.
