Natural phenomena inspired algorithms are those that simulates models of natural phenomena. Those models are idealizations of natural phenomena and different idealizations results in different algorithm. It is very interesting to see how natural phenomena inspire algorithms, which are employed for solving hard problems, works by simulating respective phenomenon. In this work, we will describe in detail how such algorithms can be created systematically and describe some of the most successful algorithms after formally presenting the general structure of optimization problems. The general structure of natural phenomena inspired algorithms is discussed with possible enhancements to it so as to increase the power of those algorithms. Generally, all the natural phenomena inspired algorithms follow the same structure, while natural phenomena are extremely complex and this complexity makes room for various enhancements in those algorithms. Although any enhancements require intensive research, but the presented enhancements are supported by nature. The open problems and research direction for future research is also presented.
