Defining a Field of Musical Operations

Understanding performance requires a new level of analysis, which I call a field of musical operations, after James J. Gibson. This field of operations makes explicit the basis for participation and the informational resources transformed in musical activity. Embracing ecological validity, it bounds the study of cognitive processes to the appropriate unit and level of analysis.
