Internet of Things (IoT) is a crucial module of the information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure in achieving environmental sustainability while minimizing the detrimental impact on the environment through the exploration and deployment of related IoT devices and technologies in this arena. IoT is an architecture consisting of real-world objects, ensuring a plausible communication network amongst them for evaluating contextual information. The autonomy, intelligent behaviour, and security have been established by various analytical tools of IoT. The IoT devices are connected to wired/wireless sensors which are responsible for the collection of data and providing real-time updates. IoT presents us with a promising way to have a major influence in areas such as smart cities, agriculture, medical and healthcare, smart energy, automotive and smart mobility, and smart water management. Monitoring and quality detection is carried out in real time, and the data is fetched autonomously using IoT and sensors. This chapter explores the role of IoT and sensors in achieving sustainability, environmental challenges associated with IoT, and the shift towards green IoT, and finally aims at giving a unified perspective on the components in an attempt at transforming our ecosystem into a smart and efficient one.
