Developing a System or the Proper Sequence for Taking Films
Russell L. Wilson · 2020
This chapter discusses both the recommended sequence in taking views of the patient by body region and the steps of actually taking a single film. When the study is of the cervical spine, almost always do the neutral lateral cervical spine first. The proper sequence for these views should be neutral lateral, followed by the extension lateral view. When the study includes the A-P full spine, it is generally the first view taken. The lateral cervical spine would be the next film taken. Taking the time to explain to the patient why the radiographic study is needed provides valuable interaction with the patient and gains their assistance during the study. One of the keys to gaining the cooperation of the patient is explaining to the patient why he/she needs the X-ray and how it will benefit his/her care, how many views will be taken, and how long the study will take.
