Sign language helps deaf and mute people to communicate with normal people. But not all people understand sign language. The design facilitates a normal communication between a deaf and mute person with a normal person who does not know their sign language. The main technology used here is video processing. On a real time basis continuous video of hand gestures is captured using webcam. The acquired video is converted to text using OpenCV which is a software tool that provides the support to image and video processing technique. The proposed system consists of four key modules like: a)pre-processing and hand segmentation,b) feature extraction, c)sign recognition and d)sign to text conversion. Segmentation can be made by using a background subtraction algorithm. Next stage involves calculating contour area, the defects of hand using convex hull, hull area, and solidity. Also we find the angle between two fingers and the aspect ratio of hand. Text is visible on screen based on each processed hand gesture, and is the final output. This is an economic system.
