Uniform and Non-Uniform HIS Layer

The low observable technology strongly demands the low RCS antenna/array mounted on the aerospace platforms. The total RCS of the platform has major contribution from the antennas mounted over it. Further it is expected that the low RCS antenna/array should have good radiation characteristics. In this chapter, the ground plane of the patch array is modified to achieve reduction in array RCS without any degradation in the radiation performance. The conventional PEC ground plane is replaced with uniform/non-uniform configuration of Jerusalem cross (JC) elements in the HIS layer. It is shown that the RCS of a microstrip patch array can be reduced by replacing the conventional ground plane with a JC- based ground plane. It has been taken care that due to low RCS, the radiation performance of patch antenna should not degrade. It is noted that the antenna RCS has two major contributions, namely the radiation mode RCS and the structural mode RCS. A systematic approach has been described to evaluate both of these RCS components.
