This chapter reconstructs the historical background of the mathematical foundation of modern computing. At the beginning of the twentieth century,mathematical correctness and truth were under scrutiny and three main theoretical positions emerged in trying to offer anappropriatemethodological answer to theirdefinitions. The resulting debatewas the basis for explaining what it means to compute.
