Breast Cancer Detection using Sonography in Women with Mammographically Dense Breast

Gomathi. R.G · 2017

BACKGROUND: Mammography is the gold standard imaging modality for screening and diagnosis of breast cancer with advances in treatment. Ultrasonography is the supplemental tool in evaluating the dense breast. Patient with mammographic dense breast had more of dense fibro glandular tissue which cause obscuration small lesion that was missed to diagnose. AIM OF THE STUDY: To determine the incremental breast cancer detection rate using US scanning of women in mammographic dense breasts. METHOD: Women who were referred for diagnosis in symptomatic breast and for screening in asymptomatic high risk patients. Those with mammographically dense breasts were included for this study, after obtaining an informed written consent to participate in the study. Mammogragm, ultrasound of both breast done for all women. Guided biopsy was done. RESULTS: Out of 75 dense breast, 13 cases had carcinoma that was 17.3%(13/75) which were confirmed by HPE. Out of 13 cases, mammography detected 10 cases that is 76.9% but ultrasonogram detected all the 13 cases (100%). CONCLUSION: Ultrasonography is the supplemental tool in evaluating the dense breast. The study found that ultrasonogram detected 23% more malignant lesion than mammogram in the dense breast. Breast ultrasound resulted in significant incremental breast cancer detection rate among the women with mammographically dense breast.
