Reflecting upon sensor-based data collection to improve decision making

Claudia Loebbecke, Irina Boboschko · Journal of Decision System · 2020

Sensor technology is gaining ground as data source and increasingly allows for uncovering information about so far untapped phenomena. Along this line, however, the quality of the new data sources is crucial for the development of adequate insight. In this paper, we explore the potential of deploying innovative sensor technology for collecting data to advance decision support. We illustrate three pilot projects of sensor-based data collection – on cows concerning their milk production, from inside beehives and on individual queen-bees, and on the distance between bicycles and vehicles in urban traffic. Thereupon, with regard to deploying sensor-based data collection, we discuss the potential, impact on human decision making and the arising ethical concerns. We summarise our explorative study and offer several suggestions for future research, which we hope will trigger a lively debate on sensor-based data collection to advance decision making.
