Contiki is a popular internet of things (IoT) operating system (OS) which supports a wide variety of low-cost, low-power IoT devices. IoT wireless networks which are comprised of devices running the Contiki OS can be used to collect time-sensitive data from sensors to a central station. The quality of service performance of such wireless networks depends on the multiple access protocol (MAC) implementations within the Contiki OS. An important quality of service performance metric for IoT and sensor networks is Age-of-Information (AoI) which measures the freshness of the collected information. In this paper, we study the average and peak AoI performance of a single hop wireless network containing Sky mote devices which run the Contiki OS for multiple in-built MAC protocols. We also implement time-division MAC as well as a hybrid MAC protocol in Contiki and study the average and peak AoI performance. The measurement studies are done in the Cooja wireless network simulator.
