A finite-impulse-response (FIR) filter with an efficient two-stage frequency-response masking (FRM) technique is presented in this paper. The prototype filter and the masking filter are cascaded to obtain a narrow transition bandwidth, and two-stage FRM is used to reduce the multipliers. The reduction of multipliers in FIR filter can achieve low complexity. Theoretical derivation, Modelsim simulation and FPGA verification are performed for an 11-bit low pass FIR filter with FRM technique. A comparison of previous works shows that the number of multipliers used in this FIR filter can be reduced, so that it has lower complexity and lower hardware cost.
