Internet of Vehicles (IoV) as an area of research has lately attracted the interest of researchers for providing safe and comfortable driving experience to users. However, available spectrum for vehicular communication is unable to support the demands of the vehicular applications. This is due to the increasing number of vehicles and the need for continuous network connectivity for the largely increasing vehicular applications. In this direction, usage of Cognitive Radio (CR) technology in vehicular networks has been proposed where vehicles can use cooperative spectrum sensing to sense the availability of spectrum holes and use them for data transmission. Characteristics of vehicular networks such as, high mobility, constantly changing network topology and use of Carrier Sense Multiple Access (CSMA) as the channel access mechanism, act as challenges in achieving an improved network performance even in CR assisted IoVs. In this work, we propose a novel spectrum sensing technique where CR assisted vehicles make use of the backoff duration for sensing the CR network. With the help of cooperative spectrum sensing, the sensed information is made available to other vehicles and data is transmitted through the available spectrum. Simulation results show that our proposed approach improves the network throughput and channel utilization. It also helps to decrease the average packet delay and increases the percentage of packets delivered in the network. The proposed method also gives better result with real-traffic traces obtained from Simulation in Urban MObility (SUMO).
