Stimulus position effect and verification of predicative statements

Nikola Rot, Aleksandar Kostić · Psihologija · 1998

In 10 experiments the effect of stimulus position in semantic verification task was investigated. Three factors related to experimental manipulation and three related to stimulus properties were varied. The first three factors were (a) the complexity of experimental context (minimal, medium, maximal), (b) constancy of the statement's attribute (constant/variable) and (c) practice before the experiment (with/without practice). The second group of factors included (a) subject of a statement (numerical/ non-numerical), (b) quality of a statement (affirmative/ negative) and (c) truth value of a statement (true/false). The outcomes of experiments show that the stimulus position effect is most pronounced in the situation of minimal complexity of experimental context, it is less pronounced with medium complexity, while there is no effect in the case of maximum complexity. In the situation of minimal complexity the effect is more pronounced for numerical statement with attribute being constant. Also, it is more pronounced for affirmative statements. Truth value, as well as practice proved not to be related to stimulus position effect.
