Governance for the Internet of Things
Stephanie Galaitsi, Benjamin D. Trump, Igor Linkov · 2020
With the growing capabilities and applications of Internet-enabled devices, known collectively as the Internet of Things (IoT), opportunities for digital disruption are commensurately increasing. A resilience-based approach provides a method to understand network interconnections in IoT systems and their potential for disruption as well as recovery. This chapter explores the emerging scholarly and policy discussions of the digital economy and examines three proposed governance frameworks: (i) laissez-faire, (ii) precautionary and pre-emptive, and (iii) stewardship. Each framework can benefit from incorporating philosophical and methodological applications of resilience to enable efficient IoT device recovery and adaptation from an evolving cyber threat landscape.
