Proactive Defense Against Security Threats on IoT Hardware

Qiaoyan Yu, Zhiming Zhang, Jaya Dofe · 2020

The increasing popularity of Internet of Things (IoT) devices brings in new security concerns, due to their limited resources for protection schemes and the difficulty of managing tremendous number of networked devices. As the root of the trust, hardware for IoT will encounter security challenges from the current globalized IC supply chain. This chapter summarizes three types of potential hardware security threats to IoT devices, including side-channel analysis attacks, hardware Trojans (HTs), and untrusted software. To address the security threats, this chapter also introduces the feasibility countermeasures, such as dynamic masking error deflection-combined method, power distribution network (PDN) noise-based countermeasure, hardened network-on-chip (NoC) design, and FPGA-oriented moving target defense.
