This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book describes the principle of mixing the existing and the newly commissioned in order to provide something &s;new&s; rather than merely a compilation. It decides to move away from specific disciplines, a feature of the first edition, in order to focus upon general areas of sonic interest and research - to include areas that have recently developed, such as violence and sound and the economics of sound. The book includes a section on sound methodologies which includes sensory disability. It also includes twelve existing pieces that post-date the first edition, whilst the remaining seventeen entries have been specially commissioned. The book situates the music of Jimi Hendrix at the crossroads between a kind of &s;non tradition and futuristic modernist experimentation.
