The Impact of the Perceived Legitimacy of Computer Monitoring on Reactive Computer Abuse.

Haiying Xu, Carol W. Hsu · Journal of the Association for Information Systems · 2020

Computer monitoring, designed to deter threats from organizational insiders, has widely come into practice. However, researches in information systems (IS) security have found that increases in computer monitoring may result in counterproductive consequences such as lowered commitment and increased workplace deviance. In this research, we attempt to investigate the factors in decreasing negative reactions to computer monitoring. Drawing on the institutional perspective, our proposed research model links the relationship between employee legitimacy perceptions of computer monitoring and privacy invasion, and the subsequent impact of computer abuse intentions. We present a theoretical foundation for this investigation and propose a plan for our research design and data collection method, with results to be presented in the future.
